About the Maridadi Community Choir
world music canterbury community choir east kent

The Maridadi community choir was formed in 1997 by Julian Raphael, then a music lecturer at Christchurch University College Canterbury,  meeting at St. Gregory's on the Canterbury campus.

From the beginning Julian gave the choir a fun, diva-free ethos, open to all regardless of experience or ability, which remains the case today. He introduced the choir to music from eastern Europe, Latin America, Israel, and Africa as well as the American shape-note tradition. Later, he formed the drumming group which in concert would integrate with the choir for many of the African songs.
As well as recording performances at St Gregs, the choir performed many times including at the Gulbenkian, Canterbury Cathedral and the Canterbury Festival.

Present Day
Anita Memmott took over in 2005 and immediately brought her own creative style to the choir whilst demonstrating the same infectious enthusiasm for making music that Julian has.  She is brilliant at harnessing people's musical gifts and is an inspirational leader. Anita is a full time freelance musician and music teacher; her passion and musical ability encourages and inspires everyone.  Above all, she makes it fun, whatever your ability!

With Anita we have sung at The Thames Water Festival on South Bank, London Sangersterine, and for the Lambeth Conference and Canterbury Festival.  Maridadi Meltdown concerts at Gulbenkian have been a great favourite, and we have taken part in the Kent Top Choir competition to name a few.   We are available for hire via the contact form!

Rehearsals are uplifting and full of laughter - Anita just loves to sing and share her passion with others.  She trains teachers in Dalcroze rhythmics and these skills help the choir to grow and develop.   Age is no barrier, Anita teaches from 18months to 80years!
